By Elections Beckoning After Cabinet Announcement

President William Ruto has occasioned by elections in some areas after naming elected leaders into his cabinet. With the promulgation of the 2010 constitution, Cabinet Secretaries are barred from holding any other public office. A departure from the previous constitution which required ministers to be members of parliament. This means that those who held elective posts and have been nominated will have to resign from their seats triggering by elections in the affected areas.

Aden Duale, CS Defense

Aden Duale who has been nominated as the Defense CS had been elected as Garissa Township MP and thus Garissa Township constituency will go back to the polls to choose Mr Duale’s successor. Mr Duale was on course to his fourth term as Garissa Township MP and had at one time served as the majority leader in parliament.

Alice Wahome, CS Water and Sanitation

Another constituency that will go back to the polls is Kandara constituency which had elected Hon Alice Wahome as their MP but has since been nominated as the CS in charge of the Water and Sanitation ministry.

Kipchumba Murkomen, CS Transport and Public works

Kipchumba Murkomen, another of Dr Ruto’s trusted men will have to relinquish his place in the senate as he assumes the role of Transport and Public works CS. He was serving his third term as Elgeiyo Marakwet county senator and had at one time served as the senate Majority leader.

Should the three parliamentarians approved by parliament, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will declare the seats vacant and call for a by election in the affected areas.
