Farouk Kibet, Power Behind the Throne

Farouk Kibet, Power Behind the Throne

The limelight shy political operative who has been with President William Ruto since way back has turned out to be as many expected, the power behind the throne.

Farouk has always been considered the point man and top aide to Dr Ruto. This is inspite of his educational background being scanty,  because after primary school there is no record of him pursuing any further education.

Mr Kibet has been close to president Ruto since his formative years in politics. The president is on record saying that Farouk never supported his first bid as Turbo constituency MP in 1997 when he went against KANU stalwart Reuben Chesire, however after winning he embraced Farouk into his inner circle and they started working together. Since then he has been a constant figure in Dr Ruto’s political life.

The soft-spoken aide is known to be a  meticulous organizer and mobilizer who has attention to detail. He even goes to the extent of deciding who sits where and who does what in functions attended by the president. Even during campaign rallies, he is the one who decides who will speak and how long should he or she speak.

Farouk Kibet and President William Ruto

For instance, on Sunday during the thanksgiving ceremony in Uasin Gishu county, DP Gachagua agreed that although they had asked other leaders during the campaigns not to give them instructions, only Mr Kibet was allowed to do so, describing him as a well-organised person.

“William Ruto and I had said that no one should be giving us instructions, but we only allowed Farouk to do so. I even asked my boss to allow me to remain with Farouk in my office but he told me to look for my own Farouk,” Mr Gachagua said.

All speakers had kind words for Farouk Kibet in a bid to endear themselves to the man who is said to be very resolute and the president’s most trusted aide. This is to avoid being in his bad books as he can block anyone access to the president, Farouk is the proverbial gatekeeper to the president.

During the burial of Mr Kibet’s father in 2018, Defence Cabinet secretary-nominee Aden Duale joked that all senior government officials who attended the event did so not because they loved Mr Kibet but they wanted him not to bar them from accessing Dr Ruto.

“All these people aren’t here because they love Farouk. They are here so that Farouk cannot block them from Ruto’s office. If there is someone who can deny you food at William Ruto’s office, it is this man called Farouk. He has no office but you will find him in the corridors,” Mr Duale said at the time.
