Real Madrid Edge out Barcelona to Top the Table

Spanish giants Real Madrid got the better of their archrivals 3-1 in the Elclassico encounter  at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. The reigning champions produced a dominant display that ended Barcelona’s seven game winning streak.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men deepened further the crisis at the Camp Nou based club. The defeat came  barely a week after Barcelona drew with Inter Milan in the Champions league and  they risk being demoted to the Europa League.

Xavi Hernandez aware of Vinicius Junior’s ability, returned Sergi Roberto to cover the right flank. This was in a bid to contain the pacy winger and prevent him from creating chances. He also solidified the defence by bringing back Jules Kounde who is fresh from injury.

However, the plan did not work as Vinicius Junior and Toni Kroos caused problems for the Catalan side. Vinicius Junior’s pace and Toni Kroos’ precise passes  were the architects of several chances, including the first two goals.

Vinicius probed in the opening stages down the left flank against the unconvincing Sergi Roberto and that was where Madrid’s opening goal came from after 12 minutes. After being set up by Toni Kroos,  Vinicius raced down the wing leaving his marker Sergi Roberto in a state of confusion to make his attempt which was saved by Ter Stergen. Frenchman Karim Benzema latched onto the rebound to put it in the net for the opener.

The Frenchman who is expected to get his Ballon D’Or award for his outstanding performances since the start of the year, almost made it double before the break but his goal was ruled offside after a perfect strike from the edge of the box.

Ten minutes before the break, Vinicius took advantage of a mistake by defender Eric Garcia to run towards the area and create space for Valverde who – unmarked on the edge of the box – slotted a bullet strike past the goalkeeper.

The visitors didn’t show any threat until the the final minutes, when substitute Ferran Torres reduced the deficit with a close-range strike from Robert Lewandowski’s low cross. However Rodrygo secured the points from the penalty spot in added time, after he was tripped inside the area by Garcia
