President William Ruto is expected to host parliamentarians allied to his Kenya Kwanza coalition in Statehouse today morning for a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting.
The head of state is expected to use this opportunity with lawmakers as he firms up his stranglehold in the august house after bagging coveted leadership and parliamentary committee positions. These will be instrumental in passing his policies in parliament.
It is expected that the meeting will be held from 7:30 Am for two hours up to 9:30 Am. Top on the agenda is the 50 billion Hustlers fund which the president needs their help in approving the expenditure.
The hustlers fund is supposed to be in operation starting December this year. The fund will be allocated annually from the National treasury in a bid to boost credit facilities for Medium, Small and micro enterprises.
Kenya Kwanza allied parties with parliamentary representation are United Democratic Alliance (145), Amani National Congress and United Democratic Movement (eight), Ford Kenya (six), Pamoja African Alliance (three), Maendeleo Chap Chap and The Service Party (two), DP and Movement for Democracy and Growth (one MP each).
Another likely agenda on the table is on Parliamentary committee leadership of four crucial committees where members are yet to agree on who will chair. These are Administration and National Security, Energy, Transport and Mining and Blue Economy. Elections for committee leadership are expected to be held next week.
The constitution envisages that the August house is supposed to conduct its activities devoid of interference from the executive wing of government. This however is often overlooked as the executive looks to control the committees through which the house controls its business.
Article 125 gives Parliament and any of its committees the same powers as the High Court to enforce the attendance of witnesses and examine them on oath, affirmation or otherwise, to compel the production of documents and to issue a commission or request to examine witnesses abroad.
