Ford Kenya and Amani National Congress (ANC) are complaining albeit not openly about the recent appointments made by the president as he shapes his government. The president has so far appointed his cabinet and also nominated 52 names for consideration as Principal Secretaries in the various state departments.
The two parties are the founding members of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition together with the President’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Mr Mudavadi who was the ANC party leader has been rewarded with the position of Prime Cabinet Secretary while Moses Wetangula of Ford Kenya bagged the National Assembly speaker.
Beyond that, footsoldiers from the two parties that draw support majorly from the Luhya nation in the former Western province have seen it as a raw deal. The Kenya Kwanza Coalition agreement had promised them 30% of the government but it seems they remained just that, promises.
Kamati understands that some senior members in ANC and Ford-Kenya are not happy with the manner in which they are being treated by their UDA counterparts, accusing them of greed. They complain in confidence as they are still lobbying for lesser positions which are yet to be filled and they wouldn’t want to come out openly as it could annoy the President.
This was evident in the sharing of slots in the parliamentary positions. UDA has Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu, National Assembly majority leader), Sylvanus Osoro (South Mugirango, majority chief whip), Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho, Senate majority leader), and Tabitha Keroche (Nakuru, Senate deputy majority leader).
Even the only position that went to Mulembe nation ignored the two parties and instead favored another UDA stalwart Boni Khalwale the Kakamega Senator who was named senate Chief Whip.
In house committees, UDA also took the lion’s share in the leadership positions with the president placing his trusted lieutenants in the leadership of key committees. Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Budget and Appropriation Committee of the National Assembly and Belgut MP Nelson Koech chairing the Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee.
Others are Mr Julius Melly (Education), Johanna Ng’eno (Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works), Kangogo Bowen (Blue Economy and Irrigation), Vincent Musau (Energy), Gabriel Tongoyo (Administration and Internal Security Affairs), David Gikaria (Environment and Natural Resources), Robert Pukose (Health), Kimani Kuria (Finance and National Planning), George Murugara (Justice and Legal Affairs) among others.
