Celebrated Embakasi East Mp Babu Owino has come out strongly to warn politicians allied to President William Ruto over their proposals to remove term limits in what could see Ruto become eligible to rule for 4 terms.
The lawmaker said that any attempt to change the law will be met with equal resistance. He said that those who crafted the constitution in 2010 were not out of mind to place term limits on executive positions of president and governors.
“For every action that government will bring to us, they shall receive an opposite and equal reactional force. The drafters of the Constitution had something in mind; that is why they put the team limit as two. This Constitution must never, should never and will never be changed,” Hon Babu said
This was a reaction to a narrative being pushed by allies of the president. First it was Fafi MP Yakub Salah during a relief food distribution exercise in his constituency who revealed plans to change the law so as to remove term limits and instead put a cap on the age limit at 75 years.
Former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu who is also the president’s ally weighed in on the matter and said it was a good initiative. Baba Yao cited former President Mwai Kibaki as a progressive leader whom term limits prevented from continuing with his good work. Mr Waititu regretted that we let Kibaki to retire only to be led into the Uhuru Kenyatta regime that he termed “barbaric”
Nandi senator Samson Cherargei also voiced support to the proposal by going to twitter where he said that he sees nothing wrong with the move.
“UDA is an epitome of democracy & rule of law. Hon. Salah Yakub is within his right to push this amendment let’s listen first, i shall support in the senate. This is a conversation that might happen in future by Kenyans on scrapping of term limit of a President.” Tweeted the controversial lawmaker.
However the UDA leadership led by Chairman Johnstone Muthama distanced the party from the utterances of the leaders and said that it was not a party position but their opinions in their personal capacities.
“Please take note of this, as the National Party, Chairman, I wish to categorically state that Hon. Yakub made a personal statement which has nothing to do with UDA party. As a Party, we stand for open Democracy, and we remain supportive of the two-term presidential limit and no ongoing discussions to scrap it,” Muthama said
