Cherargei Supports Calls for Scrapping of Term Limits

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei is the latest leader allied to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance to offer support to the ongoing discussion to scrap off presidential term limits.

The controversial topic was started when  Fafi MP Salah Yakub insinuated that Presidential terms should be pegged on the age of a president and not the duration served.

“I, together with some of my fellow MPs, are planning to push a Bill in Parliament that contests the two terms of serving as president,” he said during a relied food distribution drive in Garissa County over the weekend.

The parliamentarian also said that its in their proposals to cap the age limit at 75 for those who wish to be presidents. If the Bill is passed, President William Ruto will then have an opportunity to seek re-election for more terms given that he is currently aged 55 and will have 20 years to contest for the top seat.

Mr Cherargei who was elected on a UDA ticket said that he will support the motion should it be brought to the senate. The lawmaker took to social media where he expressed his support for the idea.

“UDA is an epitome of democracy & rule of law. Hon. Salah Yakub is within his right to push this amendment let’s listen first, I shall support in the senate. This is a conversation that might happen in future by Kenyans on scrapping of term limit of a President.” Said Cherargei in a tweet.

This comes hot on the heels of former Kiambu Governor and President Ruto’s ally Ferdinand Waititu’s endorsement. Baba Yao saw it as a blunder that we allowed Mwai Kibaki, a progressive to leave office when he could have served more terms only to find ourselves in what her termed as a “barbaric” rule of Uhuru Kenyatta.

Although the ruling party officials led by Chairman Johnstone Muthama have come out to oppose the plans, it seems they are plans still at preliminary stages and that MP Yakub, Waititu and Cherargei are just testing the waters.

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has warned Kenyans to be vigilant and protect their constitution before it is too weak to protect them. He warned of the culture he termed as “Musevenism” where leaders want to rule for life.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has also weighed on the matter and warned all those proposing the scheme to be ready for a fight as they shall oppose such a move with equal force.

“Drafters of the constitution knew what they were doing when they put a term limit… any attempt to butcher the constitution will be treated as balderdash and for every action, they will receive an equal and opposite reactional force.” Said the celebrated lawmaker.
