Charges against the Manchester United forward Greenwood were dropped last week by the CPS
Nike issue statement on Mason Greenwood axe in wake of Man Utd striker’s Instagram change
Nike have confirmed that their previous statement in relation to the 21-year-old remains applicable despite the striker including the brand in his Instagram bio.
Following his initial arrest several of Greenwood’s sponsors, including Nike, cancelled their deals with the England international striker. He was also removed from the FIFA computer game and Football Manager series. United stopped selling all merchandise with his name and face on it and a number of team-mates unfollowed him on social media.
Greenwood had been suspended by United since the allegations surfaced in January 2022. He was subsequently charged with one count of attempted rape, a count of assault and repeatedly engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour. He had been set to face trial in November of this year.
Greenwood, in a statement released on his behalf, said: “I am relieved this matter is now over. I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support
Last Friday United head coach Erik ten Hag refused to comment on Greenwood’s status at the club, telling reporters to refer back to the club’s statement in which they confirmed he would not make a return to training while their internal inquiry is taking place.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) claimed that the case had to be stopped due to the witness’ withdrawal and ‘new material’ that came to light, adding: “[There is] no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”
