Fenerbahce have reportedly expressed an interest in signing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.
The England international was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault following accusations from a woman, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.
Greenwood was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, with a trial date set for this November.
Having had all criminal charges against him dropped, the 21-year-old is free to resume his football career, but it is uncertain whether he will have the chance to do that at Old Trafford.
Man United are currently undertaking an internal investigation, but it is expected to be a lengthy progress, with Greenwood allegedly set to miss the rest of the campaign.
Greenwood, who made his debut for the 20-time English champions in 2018, has scored 35 goals and registered 12 assists in 129 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, while he has been capped on one occasion by England at senior level.
Ten Hag has reportedly spoken to the striker to tell him that he’s happy that the charges have been dropped. Nevertheless, there’s a divide within Manchester United over Greenwood making a return.
According to Fotospor, Fenerbahce have expressed an interest in luring the young English attacker to the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. The Turkish giants are keeping a close eye on developments regarding the attacker’s situation at Old Trafford.
However, there are doubts that he could continue for the Red Devils. The club are holding an internal investigation into the matter and sounding out whether Greenwood can have a future with the club. He’s set to miss the rest of Erik ten Hag’s side’s 2022-23 campaign.
A move to China has been touted as one potential option for Greenwood, while a report in Turkey claims Fenerbahce are interested in signing the striker.
According to FutoSpor, as reported by The Sun, Fenerbahce have been ‘making inquiries’ about the striker.
Like United, Fenerbahce are competing in the Europa League this season.
The Turkish side are already through to the last 16 of the competition and could potentially be drawn against United, if the Premier League side beat Barcelona in their play-off tie.
Greenwood released a short statement after the charges were dropped, which made no mention of his football career and plans for the future.
“I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support,” read the statement.
“There will be no further comment at this time.”
Speculation continues over whether Greenwood will be allowed to continue his United career, or whether he will be released or sold once the club has conducted its internal investigation.
