Ripples in the Mountain as leaders start crafting Post-Ruto succession matrix

Political tension is brewing in Mt Kenya region as leaders position themselves for control of the vote rich region even as Former president Uhuru Kenyatta seems to exit active politics.

This is accentuated by the ongoing intrigues bedeviling the former ruling party Jubilee. The Uhuru-led party has been marred with infighting as a section of its leadership want to opt out of the Azimio coalition and support the Kenya Kwanza Administration.

Former head of state Uhuru on the other hand has maintained that he remains firmly in Azimio and that he is solidly behind Raila Odinga as his party leader.

But what seems to be more exciting is the internal fights within the UDA party as to whom should be the regional kingpin after the exit of Uhuru Kenyatta.

In as much as Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua is the de facto leader owing to his position as the highest ranking leader from the region, there are others who feel that he does not have what it takes to take over from William Ruto.

Ndindi Nyoro, the youthful Kiharu MP has been touted as the most likely to be backed when the time comes. The second term MP has been a darling to the president and many times Dr Ruto has introduced him as ” One of the good leaders that we must mentor and nurture”

The subtle rebellion against Gachagua is owed to his combative type of political gesturing that leaves anyone who crosses his path hating the man. Gachagua leaves no prisoners even as he calls himself ” A truthful man.”

The Kiharu MP on the other hand is seen as an accomodative, brave and sharp politician. His exploits in the use of Constituency Development Funds also depict him as development orientated. This has endeared him to the masses.

Mr Nyoro caused political ripples this week when he brought together leaders from Eastern, Central, Rift Valley and Nairobi to Kiharu where they declared him the most ideal successor to Dr Ruto.

This comes even as Gachagua consolidated his own turf, all Jubilee MPs who have defected are loyal him led by Kanini Kega and Sabina Chege. This is in addition to Nyeri County leaders led by Governor Mutahi Kahiga, senator Wamatinga and Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, these have been his steadfast supporters since he became DP.

It remains to be seen how the succession politics will shape out in the coming days. Openly they express that Gachagua is the current Mt Kenya leader while when discussing Post-Ruto matrix, Ndindi Nyoro is the most talked about.
