Clashes in Kisii as rival political factions face off hours after Azimio rally

Kisii town was marred with chaos on Saturday evening as youths allied to Kenya Kwanza coalition faced off with those allied to Azimio La Umoja coalition. This came just a day after Azimio party leader Raila Odinga held a rally in Gusii Stadium.

Previously, leaders allied to President William Ruto led by former ally turned foe James Ongwae had warned the azimio leader against the rally. This did not stop the Azimio leader who came and had the rally flanked by the Kisii governor Simba Arati.

Police are investigating the incident even as leaders accuse the police of complacency in quelling the unrest that left 10 people hospitalized from machete injuries.

“ It is unfortunate that people who are breadwinners are now lying in bed here in hospital, under the full glare of police officers who were supposed to keep law and order’ Governor Simba Arati said as he blamed the police of just looking and doing nothing to contain the situation.

The governor was speaking to the press at Kisii referral hospital where he had gone to visit those who had been injured in the clashes.

“I want to plead with Kindiki… you have won the elections, we must reconcile the society. You cant be fighting people in banditry when you are mushrooming criminals around town protected by police officers,” he said.
