Graham Potter’s future as Chelsea boss hanging in balance as Todd Boehly makes decision

Chelsea legend in disagreement with fans over Graham Potter as boss hangs on to job

Chelsea legend Pat Nevin has insisted the Blues are playing “as good football as he has seen for a while” despite winning just two of their last 15 games under boss Graham Potter.

The former Brighton manager is under increasing pressure to turn the tide on his Stamford Bridge reign or risk losing his place in the hot seat altogether. Potter’s tenure plummeted to a new low on Saturday afternoon when Chelsea were beaten 1-0 at home by bottom-placed outfit Southampton at home.

It is clear that the Blues boss is still desperately searching for his best starting eleven five months after his appointment, with Potter making an astonishing 73 changes to the starting line-up since his arrival. For context, that is 23 more than the side with the second-most changes in Liverpool.

Writing in the Daily Mail, the Blues great explained: “Chelsea are not a dull defensive team. They’re playing inventive football, as good as I’ve seen them play for a while. For 35 minutes against Borussia Dortmund, they were really, really special. And if they’re not giving much away, they don’t need to change a huge amount. It feels really close.”

Nevin went on to compare Potter’s current plight to that of Mikel Arteta or Pep Guardiola when both took over Arsenal and Manchester City respectively.

As things stand, Boehly has absolutely no intention of pulling the trigger and reliving Potter of his duties, despite Chelsea falling to 10th in the Premier League – a staggering 11 points behind fourth-place Tottenham in the first Champions League spot – and growing frustration among the fans.

This weekend saw Chelsea beaten at home by Premier League basement dwellers Southampton, which poses the question… is Boehly right to back his man and give him the time needed to turn things around or should he swallow his pride and say goodbye?

To sack, or not to sack, that is the question.

Well, it’s certainly the one being put to Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly, who wasted no time ousting Champions League-winning boss Thomas Tuchel for his man Graham Potter after taking over from Roman Abramovich in June 2020

A former Chelsea player has made a glaring comparison between Todd Boehly and predecessor Roman Abramovich, explaining what the latter would have done with Graham Potter amid the team’s poor form.

Chelsea have won just once out of 10 matches so far this year. They have drawn four times and lost the other five games.

Both of Chelsea’s last two outings have ended in defeat. On Wednesday night they were beaten 1-0 by Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. Karim Adeyemi scored a brilliant solo goal in the second half which downed Potter’s men.
