Comedian Eric Omondi has been arrested outside parliament when he led a protest against the high cost of living.
Mr Omondi led a group of heavily built youths who carried placards written ” Tax Juu!” “Unga Juu” and “Mafuta Juu” which translate to “High Taxes” , “Flour High”, and “Fuel High” respectively.
The protesters sat on the tamarac along Parliament Road as they blocked traffic on the busy road with onlookers milling around them.
Police officers came to the scene and asked them to disperse but it fell on deaf ears.
The police officers lobbed teargas into the now swelling crowd and Eric Omondi together with some of his fellow protesters who came shirtless were bundled into a police van and driven away.
His actions drew admiration from a section of Kenyans who termed the move an act of bravery, with some such as former Chief Justice Mutunga seeing it as a pointer to an uprising.
“Mass action has begun. Uprising is on the horizon. Great political opportunity for alternative political leadership in Kenya that is devoid of the political viruses of both Azimio and Kenya Kwanza,” Said Mutunga.
“Welcome aboard Eric Omondi…more people will join our movement of change … cost of living is too high,” Narok Senator Ledama Olekina said in a tweet.
“Eric Omondi and his guys doing what the rest of Kenyans should be doing. Some people are saying it’s all clout chasing and all that, the big question is: What have you done about it? Eric Omondi is as brave as men can be,” Ramesh Saxena said.
“With everything going on in this country we need to follow what Eric Omondi is doing,” Maiyp Jr said.
“Eric Omondi would have informed us about the demonstrations so that we can all match the Parliament Buildings. We are tired. Enough is enough,” Masta tweeted.
