President William Ruto praised his scorecard today at the launch of Taifa Gas, a Tanzanian company that has been given a license to operate in Kenya.
Dr Ruto took his time to respond to Azimio leader Raila Odinga over the state of the economy. The Azimio supremo has made it his theme in the numerous anti-government rallies where he accuses Ruto of making the cost of living high.
President Ruto blamed what he called “the Handshake shenanigans” referring to the arrangement which the former prime minister had with former president Uhuru for the mess the economy found itself in. He however says that he is on course to fixing it as he has already made the economy stable and what is remaining is bringing down the cost of living.
“My first assignment for the last five months was to consolidate and stabilize the economy of our country that had been battered by reckless borrowing and unnecessary subsidies,” he said in an address during the launch of the Taifa Gas plant in Dogo Kundu.
The president also insisted that he will not reintroduce subsidies as one of the demands by Azimio leader Raila Odinga or else he will lead a mass protest against his government after 14 days.
Dr Ruto claims that the subsidies never benefited the common people but they were a cash cow by cartels. The president instead said he will focus on the production side of the market.
“We’re going to promote, instead, production, and that is why 4.5 million farmers today are accessing fertilizer that we have subsidized as the government so that we can support our production and eliminate the challenges of the high cost of living. We’re on that trajectory, there is no need for others to threaten others with demonstrations. You had 5 years of the handshake shenanigans, and that is the reason why the cost of living is where it is today,” said the President.
