Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has bowed to pressure from students and reinstated Vice Chancellor Romanus Odhiambo who had been served with a terminal leave to exit the university.
Students reacted to the news by going on a rampage which led to the indefinite closure of the university and postponement of the graduation ceremony which was to take place on saturday.
In a statement, the CS termed the decision by the University council as ill timed and directed that he resumes his duties as Vice Chancellor immediately.
“The ministry directs the university council to rescind the decision to send Odhiambo on terminal leave and to appoint an acting VC,” Machogu said.
“The university council is directed to facilitate the resumption of Odhiambo as VC with immediate effect, in any case before the closure of business on March 7.”
The council had earlier on served the embattled VC a letter showing that they were not keen on renewing his contract.
“The university council in its meeting held on February 27, 2023, evaluated your performance and found it to be below expectations. Therefore, the council declined to renew your contract as requested in your letter dated 20th December 2022,” chairman Prof Bosire Mwebi says in a letter dated February 27, 2023.
This did not go down well with the students who seem to have a soft spot for the Econometrics professor.
The students claimed that the ouster was politically motivated and laced with tribalism. The student leadership led by president Kariuki Wachira, backed by his predecessor Hunnington Oguk, led students in a demo and engaged police in running battles for the better part of Monday morning.
News of his reistament was received with jubilation and students walked for over 20 kilometers to his home and escorted him back to school like a hero
