Dr Fred Matiangi is a man under siege, the man who was arguably the most powerful Cabinet Secretary in the Uhuru Kenyatta administration was yesterday a guest at the famous address along Kiambu road.
The former Interior CS was at Mazingira House, the Directorate of Criminal investigation (DCI) headquarters honouring a summon to record a statement over the alleged raid that happened on the night of 8th February.
Dr Matiang’i arrived at the DCI headquarters at a quarter an hour to 9 AM accompanied by his supporters, political allies drawn from the Azimio coalition and those from Gusii region. Also with him was a battery of lawyers including Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Danstan Omari and former CS Eugine Wamalwa.
He was momentarily stopped at the gate, something which ensued a standoff as he was required to document the persons he was accompanied with. Eventually, he was allowed to access the premises in the company of his lawyers as others were denied entry.
Matiang’i then proceeded to meet detectives who were to probe him and facilitate him to record a statement.
The chargesheet which presented to the former CS stated his crimes which the DCI was seeking to prosecute him for.
The first charge was that of a conspiracy to commit a felony in which Dr Matiang’i was being accused of having an intention to cause panic and national unrest by claiming that his house had been raided when it was not true.
The second charge was publication of false information.
On his part, the detectives could not get Matiang’i to say anything and thus left a blank space where he was supposed to write his side of the story. His fingerprints were taken but when it came to the mugshot, he declined and even lawyer Danstan Omari disclosed that it almost led to a fist fight.
It is after this when things started getting messy. According to lawyer Danstan Omari, the DCI officers could not let them out as they were still awaiting consultations.
Meanwhile, outside the DCI gates, his supporters were getting impatient and more of them joined as rumours started making rounds that the intention could be to put the former CS in remand. This made the always busy Kiambu road have traffic snarl ups.
At around 3PM, Azimio leader arrived in the company of his political allies and supporters who had by now thronged the area around the gate. The former premier was however denied entry as the DCI officer told him he was under instructions not to allow him in.
A visibly angry Raila protested on why he was not being allowed to see the DCI director when it was a public office. He even threatened to ask his men to enter by force.
Its believed that at this point, Matiang’i was okayed to leave but before he left, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was asked to leave as it would cause tension.
A few minutes after Raila left, Matiangi emerged amid cheers from his supporters to wind up what was a day full of intrigue.
