Matiangi and Ruto Handshake is looming as Ruto prepares for Kisii Tour

Community elders, church elders and current political operatives are burning the midnight oil in a bid to bring reconciliation between the embattled former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and president William Ruto.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu held a meeting with the former CS, in what multiple sources say is the first move towards reconciling and uniting the Gusii community.

The meeting also brought together former and current lawmakers from Gusii, community elders and church leaders, all geared toward promoting reconciliation and the region’s unity.

The efforts to reconcile Matiang’i and President Ruto comes at a time when political tension was on the rise in the two Gusii counties of Kisii and Nyamira owing to the perceived harassment of the former CS.

Matiang’i  had raised a distress call through his lawyer Danstan Omari claiming that security Agencies had raided his home and they were on a mission to arrest him. This prompted Azimio leader Raila Odinga and other politicians allied to Azimio to troop to Mr Matiang’is home in Karen as a show of solidarity.

However, several government agencies vehemently denied any raid. The former CS was then summoned to the DCI headquarters, ostensibly to assist in investigations pertaining to the alleged raid by police in his Nairobi home.

But on February 15, police actually raided Dr Matiang’i’s Karen house, breaking into every room as they allegedly sought CCTV camera footage.

It was later established that Dr Matiang’i had left the nation for UK in what his lawyers called a private family business trip.

On his return, he found fresh summons which compelled him to visit the DCI headquarters so that he writes his statement over charges that had been proffered against him.

He had been accused  publishing false information with intent to cause panic and  conspiracy to commit a felony and Publication of False Information. His visit to the DCI caused alot of tension which saw the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga denied access into the Headquarters even as protests erupted in Kisii.

Community elders raised concerns over how the former powerful CS was being treated by the state and warned that further harassment will not go well with members of the Gusii community and thus a truce had to be sought.

“Yes, it is true we held a meeting.  Mr Machogu and Dr Matiang’i were present. All we want is to reconcile our people and unite the community. We heard from the former CS and he also listened to us. I must say it was a good meeting for the greater good of our community,” said Mr Joash Nyamoko the Gusii MP caucus Chairman

The meeting seems to have borne fruits as just a day after, DPP Norrdin Haji dropped charges against Dr Matiang’i citing insufficient evidence to sustain a prosecution.

Sources present at the meeting indicated that the gathering had the blessings of President Ruto who has been saying that his focus is in uniting Kenyans.
