Police have arrested over 50 student leaders who were meeting at a Nairobi hotel to discuss about the delayed HELB disbursement.
The meeting which had been called by Kenya University Student’s Association (KUSO) Chairman Anthony Manyara, was disrupted by police officers who arrested all the participants as they were preparing to issue a press statement.
The students who are serving under the umbrella of Kenya University Students Organization (KUSO) had prepared to give directives to other student organisations across the country.
They were bundled into police vehicles and taken to Central Police station. Police accused the students of holding an illegal meeting to advise their followers before the Monday, March 20, demonstrations.
The students decried the treatment saying that their rights were being violated.
“We have freedom of association but the rogue police have disrupted our meeting where we were discusing HELB matters” said Anthony Manyara the KUSO chairman
Manyara and other student leaders are active members of Movement for Defence of Democracy (MDD), an outfit within Azimio that seeks to pressure the Ruto government to adhere to democratic ideals.
