Azimio Leader made a Coup attempt on Monday- Government writes to envoys

In what seems like a plot to exert pressure on the Azimio leader Raila Odinga and his calls for mass action, the ministry of Foreign Affairs has written to envoys and the diplomatic community over what they termed to be an attempt at overthrowing a legally constituted government by the opposition leader.

.

” The ministry wishes to inform that in spite of failing to adhere to the law, Mr Odinga mobilized supporters to execute his intentions of marching to statehouse. The security officers prevented them from entering the CBD and statehouse.” Read part of the letter

The government also exonerated itself over the excessive use of force on protestors accusing them of turning violent and looting private property.

“Despite the restraint by police, some of the protestors destroyed and looted property whose value will be determined in the days ahead.”The letter said

They blamed Raila Odinga for the chaos accusing him of always using violent protests and demonstrations so as to get a post election settlement. The letter accused the former Premier of using this tactic since 1997.

“The protests and destruction of property are a continuation of the opposition leader Hon Odinga’s well-known modus operandi deployed since 1997, to force extra constitutional political settlements for his own self aggrandizement”

The ministry further said that the government in place is legal as it was formed after the August 9th election which saw William Ruto announced the winner. Azimio contested the result in court and the supreme court ruled that the election was valid.

They also accused the former Prime minister fomenting trouble and rebellion across the country over the rise in the cost of living which is a global phenomenon caused by the aftershocks of the COVID pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“We are only six months into the government, so they should give us time to implement our plans to bring the cost of living down”  read part of the letter
