Ruto’s Dilemma on how to deal with Raila as Mass action intensifies

The Kenya Kwanza government is at crossroads on how to deal with mass action protests led by Azimio leader Raila Odinga even as the opposition leader raised the heat by declaring that the protests will now be held twice a week.

The president will now have to make very tough decisions going forward as the opposition readies its troops to hit the streets on Monday and then again on Thursday.

Dr Ruto’s options are limited even as the police receive condemnation on using excessive force on unarmed protestors as the constitution allows them to protest peacefully and unarmed.

The first option on the table and which looks to be the most radical, has come from UDA MPs who suggest that the Azimio leadership led by Raila Odinga himself be arrested and forced into exile.

This is a very dangerous move because the constitution allows for the protests and Raila Odinga has a following across the nation who can turn chaotic and be a threat to peace should Raila be arrested. That can easily plunge the nation into a civil war.

Another option is to just ignore the opposition and allow them to continue with their protests. This option is being fronted by those who believe that its the police who are provoking chaos on otherwise peaceful protestors.

The problem with allowing the protests to go on will encourage more and more people to join in the protests which will soon be too big to break.

Business owners are opposed to letting the former premier continue with his protests as they count losses whenever the protests happen. Nairobi county lost 30 billion in revenue on just one day of protests.

The clergy and other opinion leaders are pushing for dialogue which is being resisted by hardliners in both camps. Some are pushing for the president to call the opposition leader so that they iron out the issues while others are proposing a handshake arrangement which will see Raila’s side of the divide get some government positions.

Either way, the president is getting it rough even as pressure mounts on him to solve the impasse as the situation is a threat to stability even as the economy takes a plunge.
