The African Union has expressed their concern over the ongoing spate of violence in Kenya as police officers battle with protestors who have heeded the calls for mass action.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat has in a statement weighed in over the matter which is getting out of hand as the protests have led to loss of lives and property even as businesses are brought to a standstill in the nation’s capital.
He urged the stakeholders to employ dialogue as a way to resolve their differences even as leaders from the opposing formations maintain their hardline stances.
“The Chairperson urges all stakeholders to exercise calm and engage in dialogue to address any differences that may exist in the supreme interest of national unity and reconciliation.” Said the AUC chairman
The protests were called by former Prime minister Raila Odinga over the rising cost of living together with what he terms as electoral fraud in the August 2022 election which saw Mr Odinga’s opponent William Ruto announced winner.
Hon Odinga then disputed the elections and took the case to the supreme court which upheld the election as having been conducted in a free and fair manner.
This informed the basis upon which the AUC chairman wishes talks to be conducted as the elections he believes were free and fair and even the highest court in the land affirmed to this.
“In this regard, Mr Mahamat recalled the successful conduct of General Elections in August 2022 in Kenya and the subsequent unanimous confirmation of the election outcome by the Supreme Court.” Read part of the statement
