Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has banned demonstrations in Nairobi hours after Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said that protestors will no longer demonstrate in Kisumu but instead all head to Nairobi to join Azimio leader Raila Odinga in his mass action protests.
In a statement, the Nairobi Governor told off his Kisumu counterpart for what he termed as ways to make Nairobi the Capital of demonstrations to the disadvantage of Nairobi residents and business people.
“The Governor of Kisumu’s idea that he can export his demonstrations to Nairobi and make our county the capital of demonstrations and associated mayhem is preposterous and totally unacceptable.
“Nairobi County has already hosted two of these demonstrations. We’ve borne the cost of the disruption so far: Nairobians have patiently put up with the disruption, and their taxes have paid for its aftermath,” the communication read.
Mr Sakaja did reiterate that his administration was working round the clock to ensure that Nairobi residents got their fair share of development without distraction from outside forces.
“In the spirit of devolution, I would advice the Governor of Kisumu, Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o’, to keep his demonstrations to his county,” the Nairobi county chief said.
Nyong’o had earlier on suspended demonstrations in the lakeside city following consultations with Azimio leadership and county officials.
“All public demonstrations within Kisumu County have from today been suspended indefinitely so that we can join the demonstrations in Nairobi,” the statement read in part.
