Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has waded into the Jubilee party leadership wrangles pitting rebel factions led by East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Kanini Kega and current Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni .
Mr Kega together with other Jubilee party members including nominated MP Sabina Chege had closed ranks with President William Ruto and pledged to work with him despite the former president affirming that the party was firmly in the Azimio coalition.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived at the Jubilee party headquarters on Wednesday, April 26, amid the controversy surrounding the party takeover.
He was accompanied by party supporters as he made his way into the party headquarters that had been cordoned off by the police after a clash between supporters of the current SG Jeremiah Kioni and supporters of Kanini Kega who has since emerged as the leader of the rebel faction.
The former president called for peace even as he urged the police officers not to be dragged into political wars by being sent to cause chaos.
“We want to inform them (police officers) to go back to their stations and not to be used by people who want to cause chaos. We have a mechanism as a political party with which to solve our problems and we shall solve. We shall have our meetings as and when. The membership will decide the future of the party.” Said the former head of state.
He further asked those who want to leave the party to do so peacefully and join their party of choice instead of bringing chaos.
“Anyone who wants to leave a party can do so and join another party. We have no quarrel with anyone. We want to guard our party and those who do not want, are free to leave.” the former president added.
