  • King Charles III is expected to visit Kenya in a few week’s time, making this his first mission outside Europe since ascending the British Throne.

The visit by the King will be part of his efforts to strengthen ties with Commonwealth nations, and will also be in honor of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, who ascended to the throne while in Kenya upon the passing on of her father King George VI in 1952.

In 1963, Kenya became a constitutional Monarchy with Elizabeth II as the Head of State. She was represented here by Governor General Malcolm John MacDonald. Consequently Jomo Kenyatta became the Prime Minister and Head of Government, until December 1964 when Kenya became a Republic within the Commonwealth and he transitioned to the Presidency.

After Kenya became a Republic, the Queen made a brief stop in the country in March 1972 and in October 1991. She undertook a state visit in November 1983.

In the coming weeks ahead of the state visit by King Charles, we will be exploring highlights of Kenya’s ties with Britain, starting from 1888 to to date.
