Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has acknowledged that he hasn’t been able to fully utilize Kalvin Phillips’ potential since acquiring him from Leeds United. Phillips, who arrived at City from Leeds United in the summer of 2022 for a significant £45 million transfer fee, is set to make just his fifth start for the team when they face Newcastle in the EFL Cup at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
“Marcelo [Bielsa] gave Kalvin the best of Kalvin in his career,” said Guardiola.
Kalvin Phillips, who was a beloved figure at his local club, rose to prominence as an England national team player while playing under Bielsa’s management, during Leeds United’s Championship days. He continued to excel, playing a pivotal role as Leeds secured a ninth-place finish upon their return to the Premier

League. Furthermore, he earned a place in the England starting lineup and played a crucial role in their journey to the Euro 2020 final.
“I’d love to have done with Kalvin what Marcelo has done to him. We have our own specific way to play and [he] sometimes struggles in a few things, while the previous [Leeds playing style] was perfect [for him],” added Guardiola.
The fact that Kalvin Phillips has had limited playing time is even more noticeable when you consider that two of his last four starts occurred towards the end of the previous season, a time when Manchester City had already secured their third consecutive Premier League title. However, now that fellow defensive midfielder Rodri is suspended for three matches due to a red card for violent conduct against Nottingham Forest, Phillips has a significant opportunity to make a meaningful contribution under Guardiola, especially after rejecting the chance to leave the club during the summer transfer window.
“The club spoke with him because he did not have many minutes,” said Guardiola. “He said ‘No, I want to stay’.
“We brought Kalvin here for his quality. He is open-minded, always wants to learn, and wants to help. This is what we want to try to do.”
