TikTok sensation Neth Nahara jailed for 2 years after “insulting” President

Ana da Silva Miguel, also recognized as Neth Nahara, a popular figure on TikTok, has become entangled in a surprising turn of events akin to a TikTok documentary.
She has been given a two-year jail term for the act of “insulting” none other than Angola’s top leader, President João Lourenço.
Initially, they imposed a six-month imprisonment sentence on her in August, which, evidently, was deemed excessively lenient.

Neth Nahara, boasting an impressive following of more than 230,000 supporters, accused the President of being responsible for “chaos, disarray, and leading a regressive government.”

To make matters more interesting, she further alleged his accountability for the shortage of educational institutions, housing, and job opportunities in Angola, a nation rich in oil resources.
It seems that not everyone appreciates candid criticism. In Kenya, our politicians, including the president, tend to either disconnect from social media, fabricate untruths, or counterattack us during public gatherings in response to the allegations made against them.
The court labeled her remarks as ‘offensive’ – perhaps implying they could use some lessons in wit – and acknowledged her significant power to influence public sentiments.
In addition to the prison term, she has been instructed to compensate the President with $1200 (equivalent to Sh.180k) as restitution for the “harm” inflicted on his reputation.
Now, it appears that this judgment is as definitive as a high note in a Whitney Houston song because, in Angola, you can only file an appeal if your sentence surpasses three years
Nevertheless, she attempted to plead her case, stating that she had no prior criminal record, expressed remorse for her statements, and emphasized her role as a mother to young kids. Unfortunately, her pleas went unnoticed.
President Lourenço, who secured a second consecutive term in a closely contested election the previous year, has successfully upheld his party’s governance for numerous years. The MPLA Party has held authority in Angola since 1975.
