Governor Kawira Mwangaza, the leader of Meru, faced a unanimous impeachment by the Meru County Assembly after a second motion was presented for her dismissal from her position.

All 59 members of the county assembly (MCAs) who were in attendance at the House voted in favor of the motion to oust Mwangaza from her role.
Surprisingly, shortly after her removal from office, Governor Kawira Mwangaza received recognition as one of the country’s top-performing governors.
She secured a spot among the top ten well-performing governors, where she was one of only two female governors, despite the challenges she faced as the governor of Meru County.
As per a survey carried out by Infotrak Research, George Natembeya and Gladys Wanga, who oversee Trans Nzoia and Homa Bay counties, have been recognized as the top-performing county leaders in Kenya.
Kawira Mwangaza, the governor of Meru, achieved the top position in a survey by Infohub Kenya with a score of 53.7%.
Initially, Governor Mwangaza faced her first impeachment on December 14, 2022, with eight charges brought against her by the Meru County Assembly. These charges included misusing public resources, nepotism, making illegal appointments, and interfering with county organ functions, which she has denied.
Subsequently, she faced a second impeachment by the Meru County Assembly, with allegations including misappropriation of county resources, nepotism, unethical behavior, vilification of other leaders, illegal appointments, usurping statutory powers, contempt of court, naming a public road after her husband, and contempt of the assembly.
The Senate plenary will now determine Mwangaza’s fate by debating and either approving or rejecting the allegations. If the Senate approves the county assembly’s decision, the deputy governor will assume the position of county boss.
