We Cant Breath, Kenyans Decry Insecurity Upsurge

Kenyans are a fearful lot, especially those in Nairobi. This is after a seemingly rise in criminal cases most of them being muggings in urban streets where thugs reign supreme.

Although the National Police Service through their spokesman Bruno Shioso came out to dispel the concerns as rumours and a ploy to discredit President Ruto’s administration.

This comes even as a doctor stationed at Kenyatta Referral Hospital revealed that there has been an increased incidence of stabbing by thugs in Nairobi. Dr Lilian Munyua expressed concerns over the hospital receiving four to seven cases where victims had been stabbed by thugs in a mugging incident.

“These past two weeks have not been easy at work. I have helplessly watched young and old, men and women, breath their last while trying to save them. Some are in ICU while others have survived but with life long injuries,” the doctor said in a Facebook post.

The thugs are said to operate with impunity and they wont think twice before giving someone life threatening injuries. The thugs alk around with crude weapons like knives and daggers while others are known to wield pistol guns.

The criminals target lone pedestrians walking in deserted streets although there have been some cases where they do it in full glare of the public.

“You’re on your own, save your loved ones especially now that the December holidays are approaching and the thugs are becoming bolder by the day. Before government comes to save you, save yourself,” the doctor said.

Reports of muggings have been on the rise in recent times and speculation is rife that police officers could be on a go slow owing to the harassment of law enforcing agencies especially the DCI and disbandment of the Special Service Unit (SSU) which has been blamed for extrajudicial killings.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has pledged to meet the newly appointed police boss Japheth Koome to address the rising cases of insecurity in Nairobi.

“Just spoken to the Inspector General of police. We have agreed to meet and share solutions and tasks in restoring order and security,” Governor Sakaja said in a tweet on Friday morning
